He said: They came to him [Yūsuf] and said that the matter was of little importance and advised him to return to Cordova – though al-Ṣumayl maintained his original view – as the rains had come, winter had arrived and the rivers had swollen therefore he should abandon his march against Ibn Umayya and return to Cordova. One said to him: ‘The man has shown no interest in taking over: he only came seeking sustenance and security. If you propose to make him your son-in-law and if you are generous to him, he will quickly agree. Send him a delegation.’
